Rules and guidelines

Postby Skizzerz » Fri Jan 16, 2009 1:49 pm

Welcome to abxy! Before using this site, please become acquainted with these rules and guidelines presented below.

General rules

These rules apply to all aspects of the site.

  1. Don't be a jerk. If you are nice to others, they'll be nice to you (usually). Flaming or intentionally going out of your way to pick on or harass other members of the site is not tolerated.
  2. Don't spam or advertise. Posting a bunch of links to a site (or sites), mass-posting something in the same or multiple threads, or repeating the same message over and over all constitute spam. Advertising should be self-explanatory, but a good rule of thumb is: if you aren't sure if it could be considered an advertisement or not, then don't post it, put it in your sig, etc.
  3. Don't promote illegal activity. This includes, but is not limited to, ROMs, .isos, and other "warez."
  4. Don't link to or post porn. If a user wants to see it, they can easily find it. This is the internet, after all.
  5. Don't feed the trolls. The reason they're here is to get a reaction, so not giving them any is a good way to make them leave. Just notify a mod if you see someone trolling and they will take care of the situation.

Forum rules

These rules apply to posting in and using these forums. Please note that individual forums may have additional rules that must be followed as well. Such rules will be noted in an announcement on that forum.

  1. Pick your user name wisely. If your user name is offensive or spammy, your account will be banned.
  2. Try not to double-post. While the worst that can happen if you do is a mod coming along and merging the posts together, it's generally annoying and serves no purpose to post twice when one post will do. Make use of the edit feature to change your post, or use the bump feature to bring attention to an aging thread you want to bring back.
  3. If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything. Since abxy encompasses all the video game systems, there are bound to be fanyboys (and fangirls) of each one. Don't go into another system's forum just to say how much it sucks, nobody wants to hear it.
  4. Be a smart poster. Posts should be substantial, not one word, and should contain clear English. It doesn't have to be perfect, but do your best. In addition, post replies in the right thread, and post threads in the right forum. It isn't hard.
  5. Show respect to the mods and admins. They try to keep the site running in the best condition possible, so if they ask you to kindly stop doing something because it is against these rules, then you should stop doing it. That being said, if a mod or admin is being abusive towards you, please notify us so that we can take the appropriate measures to stop that activity

Chat rules

These rules apply to using abxy's IRC network.

  1. Don't talk in colour unless you absolutely need to. Because everyone can set up their IRC client different ways, certain colours may be practically invisible for them. Also it can be annoying. Use it sparingly.
  2. Don't impersonate others. Pick a nickname that corresponds to your account on the forums. If you are caught impersonating another person, you will be banned from the ABXY network.
  3. Don't advertise other channels. Saying something like "Everyone, join #blah" is considered advertising, redirecting a user to a channel about the specific topic they wish to talk about is not.
  4. Don't talk in shorthand. It takes at most 5 seconds more to fully type out a word instead of using shorthand. Shorthand is ugly and hard to read, and makes you look like an immature 12-year-old. As such, don't do it!
  5. Don't be an idiot. Basically, no spamming etc etc. If you aren't sure if something is good to say, ask before saying it.
  6. Read the channel topic. Additional rules on a per-channel basis may be in the topic, so read it. For example, while cussing is normally allowed, a specific channel may wish to disallow it.
  7. Do not private message without consent. If you want to say something, say it in the channel. Private messaging people for no good reason tends to annoy them, and repeated complaints may get you banned from the ABXY network.

Moderator rules

These rules apply to abxy's moderators and admins. If you find a mod or admin not obeying these rules, please let us know so that we can take the appropriate action.

  1. Follow the above rules. Because of your mod or admin status, you are now a role model for other users. If you follow the rules, most of the other users will follow them as well. If you break the rules, most of the other users will break them as well.
  2. Be lenient. Try to warn the user that what they are doing is unacceptable before banning them or revoking their privileges. If they continue to disregard the rules, then (and only then) may you ban them. Use short temporary bans (a day to a week) unless absolutely necessary. There are always exceptions to this, of course, which brings us to...
  3. Use common sense and be responsible. Gauge the situation and hand and take an appropriate action. However, be prepared to back yourself up if confronted as to why you took that action. If you think that you could get in trouble for doing something, then don't do it.
  4. Be a member of the community. Don't be Simon from "Simon Says." Instead, be a member of the community and don't flaunt your mod or admin privileges around to make other people do what you want.
